Memories of Venice - Print Options

Memories of Venice came from a trip my wife, kids and I took through Europe back in 2015. Venice was our very first stop, and it stayed with me long after we left. It was one of those places you grow up dreaming about visiting, and suddenly we were there, living it. Every corner felt like a postcard. It was busy and bustling, yet somehow still magical, and I remember thinking how lucky we were to be sharing that moment together.

There was something about Venice at dusk that felt almost unreal. Gondolas drifting through the canals, the city glowing as the sun dipped lower, everything slowing just enough for you to breathe it in.

When I painted this piece, I wasn’t trying to recreate Venice perfectly. I was chasing the feeling of being there. The artwork evolved slowly, built up over many layers to create depth and richness in the colour. Each layer was about finding that romantic ambience, the softness of sunset, and the warmth we felt while we were there.

The loose brushstrokes and texture reflect how it lives in my memory rather than how it looks in a photo. There’s calm in it, but also nostalgia and emotion. That mix of peace and gratitude that comes from sharing a moment like that with the people you love, knowing even then that it wouldn’t last forever.

This piece is a reminder to slow down and really savour those fleeting moments while you’re in them.
