My Octopus is a 30 x 40cm original acrylic painting inspired by the incredible documentary My Octopus Teacher, which I watched in 2020.
Like a lot of people, I came away from that film seeing these creatures very differently. Their intelligence, curiosity and ability to adapt is pretty extraordinary. There was also something about the connection at the heart of the story that stayed with me. That reminder that when we slow down and really pay attention to the natural world, there’s so much more going on than we realise.
I wanted this painting to have feeling rather than perfectly realistic. Loose brush strokes, strong shapes and bold colour give her a sense of movement and curiosity.
Maybe that’s why I love her. She’s a little unusual, wonderfully colourful and completely herself.
