Ever watched a storm roll in over the ocean? There’s something captivating about it. Dramatic, exciting and a little unpredictable.
Distant Storm was inspired by memories of Forster on the NSW Mid North Coast, where my parents lived for many years. We spent a lot of time there as a family, enjoying the beaches, beautiful weather, good food and those powerful storms that would occasionally roll in off the ocean.
My parents have both passed now, so Forster holds a different meaning for me these days. This painting brings back memories of standing near the water as the sky changed, the wind picked up and everything suddenly felt alive.
I wanted to capture that energy through bold colour, expressive movement and texture. The contrast between the darkening sky, flashes of warm light and deep ocean blues creates that feeling of nature shifting right in front of you.
For me, Distant Storm is as much about memory as it is the landscape. A reminder of places, people and moments that stay with us long after they’ve passed.
