Life is full of choices

I discovered not long ago that the choices I make every day determine where I am.

What exactly do I mean by that? Let me give you a little back story first.

I consider myself fortunate. Things are pretty good. Beautiful wife and kids, nice home, good income from my own business, surrounded by family and friends.

A few years ago however I went through a rough time after my father passed away, and all this started to change. I only saw this in hindsight of course… thankfully I saw it!

My moods started to change, I became very irritable and snappy. My business started to fail and I slowly watched my numbers decline. I felt my family was pulling away from me. All this was happening to me because everything around me wasn’t how I wanted it to be.

What I eventually realised through reading and podcasts was that I created all this. I chose to blame my clients for not working with me any more, I chose to blame my family for pulling away from me. I chose to focus on what everyone else was doing that wasn’t making me happy, rather than choosing to be happy within myself.

What I discovered is that every choice we make, consciously or subconsciously, determine where we are. ie: if you choose to eat cake for breakfast every day and not exercise, that explains why now you would be overweight and unfit. If you choose not to brush your teeth, that explains why your teeth are rotting etc

The conscious choices we make every moment of every day create our current circumstances.

Look at where you are today. This is a direct result of the choices you have made up until that point. Not everything is how you would choose it to be, but these choices form together to create the person and the life you are living today.

For me, this realisation gave me the will and determination to change what I had created by making better and more conscious choices. Not necessarily an easy thing to do, but having this front of mind definitely helped me steer myself in the right direction, and create the life I wanted and not one that I just accepted.

I chose to be happy, I chose to be nice, I chose to stop blaming others for my unhappiness, I chose to exercise, I chose to smile more, I chose to start working on the business idea I’ve had for years, and I chose to start painting again.

In the end, the choice to simply be aware of your choices is yours. You have one life, one opportunity to make it the best it can be, to make it perfect in your eyes.

“Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision.”

Choosing to live authentically is the most important step you can take to thrive in your relationships, your career, and in how you feel about yourself. Based on my own experiences and choices, I know these choices have changed my life for the better, and it will only continue to get better.

And I’m sure you’d be surprised if you tried to see how all your choices have led you to where you are today.
